Dunmore High School Theater Poster

Project Brief:

The basic difference between a poster and other print media is that the poster speaks to the audience on the move. Pieces such as postcards, brochures and booklets are designed for the reader who has time to sit or stand and read for a while. A poster must capture the attention and get the message across in a matter of seconds. Therefore, a poster must be:

  • Striking, attention grabbing, have dominant elements such as a headline or image that will quickly catch your reader’s eye. Your graphic elements and poster text should be large in proportion to your poster dimensions, no matter what the size. Have bold, intense colors to enhance your message so that it can be easily seen from a distance.
  • Able to communicate a message quickly. It should have the most important message emphasized by size, color, or contrast. Your prospects are constantly in motion, passing your poster on their way to do something else, so it’s important that they can easily read your poster and understand its message at a glance and from a distance.
  • Easily viewed and read. The type and imagery should be arranged in a logical, functional hierarchy. Create art that is related to the message. The type and imagery should reinforce each other.
  • Have a simple and clear layout so your reader knows where to find the information. Include all important information such as date, time, location, contact name and telephone number. Don’t distract your audience with unnecessary design elements or text. Stay focused on your message and naturally guide the readers toward a desired conclusion.

Objective:

To design a poster for Dunmore High School’s Theater Program. This will give you experience working with an actual client. Your solution will have to address the client’s needs and meet their deadlines. As a class, we will pick the three strongest solutions to send to the client for approval. They will pick one of the three to use in their promotions for the play.
