Alternate Compositions Project

Purpose:

This drawing exercise will explore multiple views of a subject of the artist’s choice. The intent is to explore different ways of perceiving and depicting a subject. Explore different compositions and different focal points to see the impact they have on the depiction of your subject.

Process:

  • Create a grid of 5 rectangles on an 18” x 24” sheet of paper. Use the diagram above as your guide to the size and spacing of each rectangle.
  • Choose a subject of some personal significance. The subject can be a relatively small object that interests you (examples: glasses, a toothbrush, a pen, a brush, a shoe, a watch, etc.) or it can be a small collection of related objects arranged in different ways.
  • Draw 5 different versions of the subject in the rectangles. Explore different compositions in each rectangle. Try cropping the object, enlarging it, zooming in on it, drawing just a part of it, or placing it at different angles. Experiment with developing more positive space or more negative space.
  • Be creative. Try new ideas. Experiment. Explore. Have fun.
  • Cover the finished drawing with a sheet of tracing paper.
  • Put your name on your work.
