Value Study 1: Light, medium and dark objects

Create a composition with at least three objects in it. One should be predominately light in value, the second mostly of middle value and the third mostly of dark value. You can include more than these three items in your composition. Be sure you have a primary center of interest in your composition. There can also be secondary areas of interest. Light your setup in a way that shows the forms of your objects and creates interesting and aesthetically pleasing areas of light and shadow. Think about using objects with contrasting shapes and textures to create variety, or explore how similar objects can add unity to your composition. Building a predominately dark composition with a smaller, contrasting light area (or vice-versa) is a good way to draw the eye to a center of interest.

  • Make your composition 18″x 24″
  • Use a range of pencils from hard to soft to create a full range of values.
  • Cover your finished drawing with a sheet of tracing paper.
  • Put your name on your work.
