Value study 2: Reflective and transparent objects

Create a composition with several objects that are transparent and reflective, such as glass and metal. Choose a combination of clear glass and colored glass, as well as highly-reflective and less reflective objects. You can include other items in your composition. Be sure you have a primary center of interest in your composition. There can also be secondary areas of interest. Light your setup in a way that shows the forms of your objects and creates interesting and aesthetically pleasing areas of light and shadow. Pay special attention to where the brightest highlights appear and the shapes of reflections on objects.

  • make your composition 18″x 24″
  • Use charcoal to create a full range of values.
  • You can use hatching and cross hatching or continuous tone to build up your darker values.
  • Cover the finished drawing with a sheet of tracing paper.
  • Put your name on your finished work.
