Value Study 3: Toned Paper

Working on toned paper allows you to start with a middle value and build darker and lighter values using dark and light media. Create a composition with some dark, middle and light value objects. Include some cloth items set up in a way that creates interesting folds. Also include at least one reflective object that will give you some very bright highlights. You can emphasize mostly dark or mostly light values, with a smaller section of the opposite value for contrast. Light your setup in a way that shows the forms of your objects and creates interesting and aesthetically pleasing areas of light and shadow. Pay special attention to where you use white to create the brightest highlights. Be sure you have a primary center of interest in your composition. There can also be secondary areas of interest.

  • make your composition 18″x 24″
  • Use charcoal and white chalk, conte crayon or colored pencil to create a full range of values.
  • You can use hatching and cross hatching or continuous tone to build up your darker values.
  • Cover the finished drawing with a sheet of tracing paper.
  • Put your name on your finished work.
