Value Study 4: Atmospheric (or aerial) Perspective

Draw a scene or a still life employing atmospheric perspective techniques to showcase the distance or depth in your composition. As objects get farther away we see less detail and contrast, and objects appear smaller. Overlapping objects also helps create depth in a drawing. Be sure you have a primary center of interest in your composition. There can also be secondary areas of interest. Light your setup (if it’s a still life) in a way that shows the forms of your objects and creates interesting and aesthetically pleasing areas of light and shadow.

  • Make your composition 18″x 24″
  • You can draw with a medium of your choice (pencil, charcoal, ink, wash).
  • Cover the finished drawing with a sheet of tracing paper.
  • Put your name on your work.
