1-pt. Perspective

Draw a scene from life employing 1-point perspective techniques to create the illusion of depth in your composition. Also include the principles of atmospheric perspective in your drawing. As objects get farther away we see less detail and contrast, and objects appear smaller. Overlapping objects also helps create depth in a drawing. Pick a scene that lends itself to 1-point perspective, such as a long hallway or looking down a straight road. A shorter space will also work, just be sure there are enough objects with parallel edges pointing to the vanishing point to create an interesting 1-pt. perspective scenario. Be sure you have a primary center of interest in your composition. There can also be secondary areas of interest. Light your setup (if it’s a still life) in a way that shows the forms of your objects and creates interesting and aesthetically pleasing areas of light and shadow.

  • Make your composition 18″x 24″
  • You can draw with a medium of your choice (pencil, charcoal, ink, wash).
  • Cover the finished drawing with a sheet of tracing paper.
  • Put your name on your work.
