Commemorative Stamp
Design a commemorative stamp which conveys a sufficiently weighty theme to represent America. Your stamp design should honor significant ideas, inventions, people, culture or events. No commercial enterprises.
Just because you are portraying a weighty theme don’t feel that you must use a “serious” or traditional style. A review of past stamps will reveal that the post office is open to a wide variety of styles and is not afraid to have fun with the images on stamps.
In the world of stamps, size definitely matters. Images that may work well on a book cover or poster may not be effective when reduced down to stamp size. Make sure your design is effective at its intended size.
Basic formulas for stamp content:
- Portrait bust: profile or full-face
- Emblem: coat of arms, flag, national symbol, etc.
- Numeric: a design built around the numeral or value
- Pictorial
Specs:
- The final presentation of this project must include a large scale version (fits on an 8.5” x 11” paper) and an actual size version mounted together on a board.
- Stamp size: The standard USPS commemorative format measures 36 mm x 22 mm. There are other sizes that are even bigger. You may use a bigger size if you can validate it with research.
